Give by Cell aids 826 National in raising nearly $3,000 in text message donations
San Francisco-based youth literacy nonprofit 826 National raised nearly $3,000 in one day via Give by Cell's text message donation technology.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, September 29, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Youth literacy nonprofit 826 National raised nearly $3,000 in text message donations during their 1st Annual 8/26 Youth Literacy Day using Give by Cell mobile giving technology.

Through in-store and website calls-to-action and email newsletters sent on the morning of August 26, they invited potential donors to text "WRITE" to 20222 and make an automatic, one-time donation to any of 826's eight nationwide chapters.

The buzz and excitement surrounding the one-day event combined with social media gave the campaign a boost, as donors texted their donations and immediately let their friends know via Facebook and Twitter updates. At the end of the day, the organization raised nearly $3,000 through text message donations. Donations have continued arriving even 30 days after the event.

While 826 staff and volunteers began their marketing efforts in advance of Literacy Day, the mobile giving campaign was most effective in rousing public attention spontaneously on the day of the event. It proved to be a simple way to get the public involved, using a familiar technology to different ends.

"Mobile giving was so easy," said Erin Archuleta, Development and Outreach Director at 826 National. "People are really comfortable with text messaging -- it's not a brand new concept to anyone. It's something that is in the moment, and for a one-day event capturing the immediacy was great."
