Guide by Cell mobile technology drives new text message alert system at Monterey Bay Aquarium
Monterey Bay Aquarium has used Guide by Cell mobile technology to launch an alert system that lets visitors opt-in for text messages about unscheduled animal feedings.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, October 10, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Monterey Bay Aquarium has debuted a text message notification system that lets visitors know about unscheduled animal feedings. The driving technology was built by leading mobile service provider Guide by Cell, which provides mobile audio solutions to over 800 aquariums, zoos, museums and nonprofit organizations worldwide.
Aquarium visitors can text "FEEDING" to a short code and opt-in to receive text message alerts throughout the day. Upon leaving the aquarium, they simply text "STOP" to the same short code to cancel alerts.
Guide by Cell's text message technology has been successful in allowing aquarium staff to advertise feedings which -- though they have large visitor appeal -- are difficult to promote without a set daily schedule.
In addition, Guide by Cell hopes the text alerts will control crowd flow by directing some visitors to more under-the-radar events during peak hours.
"We feed the animals at unpredictable times throughout the day, so we're using this technology to connect people with feedings that you can't really publicize widely," explained Mike Chamberlain, Manager of Innovation for the Guest Experience at the Aquarium. "It allows us to connect guests to things they would otherwise miss."
